    Hi Dr Woeller,
Is there an explanation for sudden bouts of hyperactivity, impulsiveness, uncontrollable laughter, usually associated with increased stimming and sleeplessness. While I realize that these are, for the most part, classical characteristics of autism, I just wonder why there would be waves of improvement and regression. I know from the lectures that giddiness and unexplained laughter can be signs of Candida, but the observations I have been making are different from the usually observed silliness. The laughter is just one sign of many others suggesting a state of “hyperexcitability” (not even sure if this is a scientifically correct description). This is sometimes accompanied with an almost addictive urgency to touch his genitals. As is often the case with autism, it is quite difficult to pinpoint what the trigger is. I just wonder if this collection of symptoms may point to a biochemical, hormonal or metabolic disturbance that can therefore be addressed to alleviate these symptoms,
    Thanks so much,
    Riham

      Riham,
Hormonal changes with puberty can cause these behaviors. But, more commonly its a candida issue and/or reaction to an offending phenol rich food such as artificial coloring or flavoring. The hyperexcitability is particular strongly correlated to food chemical sensitivity. I have even seen this happen in kids from ‘natural’ flavorings or perfume exposure or other strongly scented products.

Thanks Dr Woeller. This is very useful.
I will focus on anti- Candida medication. What would you suggest I can do to address phenol sensitivity? Would dietary restriction be sufficient?

        Riham,
Phenol sensitivity is typically addressed with added Molybdenum at 50 to 100mcg daily, along with Epsom Salt cream (one teaspoon) applied to skin twice daily and No-Fenol Digestive Enzymes (which come from Houston Enzymes) with high phenol foods. All of these supplement are available from New Beginnings Nutritionals – https://nbnus.com. Along with phenol support supplements the diet really needs to be clean of artificial flavorings and colorings.

At this point, you I am assuming you don’t really know if these behaviors are phenol, yeast or both. The first step is to address yeast with anti-candida medication and see if this helps.
