    Dr Woeller,
My son has been put on trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazol and has a MTHFR 677 ++ mutation which means he has difficulty using his folinic acid. I supplement him with folate for this. trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazol uses up folinic acid which in one way I guess means he wil have less build up of folinic acid not being used. Would you advice giving extra folate? He will be on this antibiotic until at least October for his PANDAS.
    Thanks Gaby

      Gaby,
Yes. I think that is a good idea. I would look to give at least an extra 1000mcg daily of folate while on the antibiotic. I am assuming you are taking about L-Methyl-Folate?

The label says FOLATE (AS QUATREFOLIC® (6S)-5-METHYLTETRAHYDROFOLIC ACID EQUIVALENT TO 139 MCG (6S)-5-METHYLTETRAHYDROFOLIC ACID, GLUCOSMINE SALT)78 mcg. Would you recommend an other product?

      Thanks

        New Beginnings Nutritionals carries a 1000mcg L-Methyl-Folate supplement – http://www.nbnus.net/shopexd.asp?id=426.
